Someone with dissociative identity disorder has multiple persons (also known as alters) in his or her body. The complaints can differ per alter. Every alter has different behavior and sometimes a different voice, taste or style. People with this disorder have no control over the switching of the alters.
What are these alters you talk about? And what does it feel like? For someone who doesn't live with DID, I imagine it's highly confusing and even unbelievable.
For starters, I have voices inside my head. They are not external sounds. They're more like the conscious thoughts you have in your mind.
However, my voices don't sound like a conscious thought pattern. They have their own 'sound'. It's similar if you listen to people around you in a restaurant. They are distinctive. When your partner or colleague talks to you, you know the sound of their voice and can tell them apart from other people. This is the same with my voices, I can tell them apart when they talk.
Another example is that an alter can take over the body, do all kinds of stuff, say, buy a new television. When another alter takes over, it can be very confusing or even frustrating to find a new television, while we needed the money for the mortgage.
